Studio B’s MegaGalactic MultiScreen Event

What’s more rewarding than producing videos for the big screen?

Try producing a video series for six large screens playing simultaneously at a live event. So we were thrilled when the high profile event production firm Opts Ideas approached us about producing a series of multi-screen videos for their client’s annual conference in Chicago.

The client, LPL Financial, is one of the nation’s largest independent brokers. Each year they hold a conference to inspire and educate their independent advisors. The theme at this year’s conference is “Focus on the Future”, examining the unique financial complexities, concerns and goals of financial advisor’s clients. The challenge was to produce a video series that would play over the course of this three-day event. Each video hat to be:

1) visually impactful
2) emotionally compelling
3) multi-dimensional
4) entertaining (these people are at a three-day conference about financing)!

It was the perfect project for our collective skills: short form story-telling and dynamic motion graphics.

With this in mind, Studio B produced a series of three documentary-style vignettes, profiling three unique families at different life stages and critical financial changes.

The real challenge began with finding the families to cast. Not only did they need to fit the age group and financial standing of LPL’s clients, but they had to be charismatic people, with a visually impressive pastime (rowing, skydiving, mountain biking) and a compelling storyline.

From dozens of families originally nominated, we ultimately landed on three sweet families – the Sutters, the Snows and the Crums  - all of whom had their own unique story to tell. We worked closely with OptsIdeas to craft three short docs that would compliment the style and message of the event. Our post-production supervisor Aaron Barry met the technical and creative challenge of orchestrating footage, graphics and audio for six different screens head on.

Without having seen the venue we had to determine the perspective of viewers in their seats at all angles and how to best utilize the three screens at the far end of the stage and the smaller screens in front. We determined the back screens would act as a moving “wallpaper” and the three smaller front screens would play the documentaries. For the graphical introduction to each segment, all six screens would fill with animation that would eventually reveal a live action portrait of the family.

How’d it turn out? In the end, thousands of people attended the conference and we sent our very own producer/director Jane Selle Morgan to report on viewer response. “They laughed, they cried, and most importantly, they got the message!” With this mega-galactic project now complete, we’ll be holding our own in-house screening to toast a mission completed.

Studio B Gets Glamorous: Employee Training with Sephora

Studio B director David Collier has spent a lot of time in Sephora lately, not just for their jungle red lipstick, but to produce a series of employee training videos for their staff. Each tutorial video covers a different aspect of Sephora’s retail culture, and teaches their crew how to better care for their customers while staying on top of sales.

Shooting on location in various Sephora stores has been a gaffer’s dream. Each retailer is outfitted with a stellar lighting system that already makes everyone look like a movie star. We interviewed different “cast members” (sales associates) on some of their best practices in customer care, with a “How to” look at “smart sampling” and fragrance sales. We were careful to keep the look of each video very Sephora – sleek, stylish and glamorous. With the help of two cameras, and of course, an endless selection of cosmetics at our disposal, we managed to make what could have been standard employee training videos, fun, charismatic and educational…Not to mention, we always left set smelling and looking fabulous!

Stay tuned for our next Sephora video: a humorous take on Safety Training for new hires. Think “The Office” meets “makeup.”

STUDIO B JOINS YAO MING TO SAVE SHARKS IN PSA

Studio B Films recently received an urgent call from WildAid, a Bay Area-based nonprofit aiming to end illegal wildlife trade through public service announcements and awareness campaigns. Their high-profile spokesman and NBA superstar Yao Ming had agreed to be featured in yet another PSA on behalf of the sharks and WildAid asked Studio B to produce it. We were thrilled to be a part of such an exciting production and for such a great cause.

Each year millions of sharks are hunted for their fins to satisfy an expensive culinary trend in Chinese culture, sharkfin soup. Ming’s fame is stratospheric throughout Asia and he has used his celebrity to support the ban on shark finning and to highlight the cruelty of this unnecessary practice. Ming, who stands at just around 7’7” (towering over David, our 6 ft director and DP in the photo below),  joined the Studio B crew and over 50 kids on San Francisco’s picturesque Pier 7. The kids, who we managed to pull from various San Francisco schools (including the Chinese American International School), were directed to run and charge a thoughtful looking Ming at the end of the pier as he contemplates our children’s future oceans.

Nature herself gave us a helping hand on shoot day with the clearest blue sky and warmest weather of the year. A slew of documentary crews piggybacked on our production, taking the opportunity to talk to Ming about ocean conservation and to grab some candid footage of the basketball star on set.

The PSA is now in post, undergoing a serious amount of special affects work  - we won’t tell you what happens, you’ll just have to look out for the surprise when it airs. In the meantime, have a look at some of the fun production stills our in-house PA’s shot on location.

It’s not often we get to work on something so fun and rewarding. PSA’s are a great way for us to combine our love of documentary, story-telling and social commentary with our talent for commercial production. Thanks WildAid. Thanks Yao. And most importantly, thank you to the many kids and patient teachers who made it all possible.

Branding Videos: Studio B Brings Work-Life to Life

We were recently approached by WCG, a renowned communications and PR firm, to create a branding video for their dynamic company and its lively staff. Creative Director, Walt Whitman (not of Leaves of Grass) came to us with a script, some imaginative ideas and a clear message of what he wanted to communicate to perspective clients and new hires. The result was an inspirational peek into the company culture and the work they do. Walt understood the greatest asset these branding videos have is their ability to bring not only the company’s portfolio to life, but to showcase the company’s process and personality, while remaining professional.

The Studio B crew ran around WCG’s San Francisco office for one day, filming everything and everyone we thought could speak to the company’s character. In keeping with WCG’s high-end production values, we filmed on the RED and featured a few different tracking shots, giving the space a very fluid, open look and the overall video a commercial feel.

Check out the end result. The music track is from local SF band, Collider. Like the opening credits of a feature film, music in a branding video is key to setting the right tone. We were lucky to stumble upon this group and their track “Translator” that really brought the piece together.

To anyone interested in producing a branding video, consider this: what better way to simultaneously be productive and goof off at work than making a movie!?

Studio B Produces Videos for SF Symphony’s 100 Year Gala

One of our beloved city’s proudest institutions, the San Francisco Symphony, hired Studio B to produce a series of videos for its “Second Century Campaign” and gala event. We were honored to work on this landmark occasion.  One of the projects was a 4-minute highly graphical sizzle video that would set the celebratory tone, honoring the orchestra’s past 100 years while looking forward to the next 100. The other project was a series of three documentary-style vignettes of people whose lives had been affected by the SFS and its impressive musical repertoire.  For this series, Studio B Films joined forces with Kate Stilley Steiner of Citizen Film  All of these videos were screened at the Symphony’s Second Century gala dinner at Davies Zellerbach Hall.

The graphic piece is a dense package, highlighting the Symphony’s greatest achievements to date and the possibilities yet to come, while the documentaries strike a more personal chord featuring interviews with concertmaster Sasha Barantschik and Youth Orchestra talent Nathan Chan. On a side note, Nathan was a thrill to interview, an inspiring young man with such drive and passion for music. He’s an excellent example of what the Symphony can do for a kid and of what lies ahead for classical music.

Studio B Goes Mobile: Producing Video for Mobile Apps

With so many great new mobile apps and digital publications hitting the market, the calls have been pouring in to Studio B from developers looking to produce dynamic product demo videos for their new applications. Our first adventure in mobile app publishing was a video we produced with Adobe for WIRED Magazine. This snappy, fast-paced 60-sec video allowed WIRED to illustrate how the digital edition of their magazine (as seen on the Ipad) has all the visual impact of its paper version, enhanced by interactive video and animated infographics.

Here’s what WIRED magazine had to say about the opportunity digital publishing has offered them. ”We can now offer you a history of Mars landings that lets you explore the red planet yourself. We can take you inside Trent Reznor’s recording studio and let you listen to snippets of his work in progress. And we can show you exactly how Pixar crafted each frame of its new movie, Toy Story 3”. Studio B’s job was to capture all of that in a video…

We then produced a short documentary video for Adobe and WIRED that delved deeper into the future of digital publishing and helped WIRED launch their first digital reader application. Take a look and see what we came up with:

We have been told that, a well produced video not only works to market your app to consumers, but helps app developers get reviewed and can generate reader’s excitement and interest in those reviews…something to consider for all you starter-uppers looking for a little exposure.
Digital publications are the future of magazines. WIRED is leading the way (of course) with book publishers and distributors (Amazon.com, Atria Books) following suit. There have been a lot of exciting recent developments in this arena and Studio B is poised and ready to support the digital publishing revolution.

Studio B Films goes bionic! Our recent video for Berkeley Bionics’ product launch of ELegs has gone viral — reaching over 320,000 viewers on YouTube in five days.

ELegs is a bionic exoskeleton for people paralyzed from the waste down, that when worn, gives them the power to stand and walk on their own. Wired Magazine, CNET, Current.com, and dozens of techie blogs are spreading the word with the help of our video which Berkeley Bionics posted on YouTube last Thursday.

Our video features testimonials from three individuals who sustained paraplegic injuries, taking their first steps after only a few hours in the ELegs. It was a moving experience to witness and document, Amanda’s joy and enthusiasm was infectious…probably one of the reasons our video went viral.

Clif Bar & Studio B Films Lovin’ the Ladies: Film Festival Trailer for Lunafest

What do all-natural, organic energy bars and Studio B Films have in common?

We both support women in film! Clif Bar, makers of Luna, the whole-grain power bars for women, premieres LunaFest this fall in San Francisco. Lunafest is a traveling film festival by, for and about women that raises money for the Breast Cancer Fund. We were honored when Clif asked us to produce the trailer and teaser for this inspirational event.

The concept was to hear various LunaFest participants tell their stories – since that’s the essence of the film festival – storytelling. We wanted a beautiful but relevant setting and settled on Alameda’s vacant Art Deco theater. The strong and striking aesthetic of the building perfectly framed our subjects who were lit with flares to give them an ethereal, rock star quality. We then incorporated hand-written text to give the video an intimate touch that sparks an added element of intrigue.

We’re proud of the outcome, and even prouder to participate in such a great cause. Visit the Lunafest website for tickets and theater location information. But first, take a look at our trailer for a bit of inspiration.

Studio B and Recology Produce Engaging Instructional Video to Save the Planet…one bin at a time

Waste not, want not. For the last few weeks, it’s been nothing but paper, plastic, aluminum and glass here at Studio B with our latest instructional video project for Recology, (previously NorCal Waste Systems), Northern California’s refuse and waste management system. These guys are industry leaders and were one of the first urban recycling centers in the nation. They recently implemented composting and single-stream recycling, and needed a series of training videos to effectively educate the public and prospective clients on how it all works – What goes in which color bin? What is recyclable and what is compostable? How do you get rid of old cell phones and dead batteries? Where does that greasy pizza box go?

As with most instructional videos, the subject matter had real potential for a snooze-fest, so the challenge was to maintain viewers’ interest while effectively training them. We thought it was a perfect opportunity to employ a playful first person POV visual style using hands on a green screen, paper cutouts (arts and crafts style), lots of graphics and animation. We let the VO light and conversational to keep the audience engaged without diminishing the importance of each instruction. In the end we produced five entertaining and educational training videos without getting too complicated. Keep it simple stupid.

P.S. All paper cutouts and plastics used in the making of these videos were properly disposed of.

Deep Flow and Wheel of Yoga now on DVD: A Smush Media and Studio B Films Co-Production

Namaste! After spending a weekend filming with world-renowned yoga instructor David Moreno, our chakras are aligned and we feel better than ever. Our friends and colleagues at Smush Media invited us to co-produce a duo of instructional yoga videos and we were thrilled to join them. This is the third yoga video Studio B has produced and the process is always an enjoyable (and rejuvenating) one. Despite some similarities, each instructional fitness video is a different experience with distinctive needs. Meeting the challenge of creating a unique and dynamic video that is suitable for its niche has taught us a thing or two and we are especially proud of these last two videos now available on DVD.

Here’s our production profile for Deep Flow Yoga: Lateral Sequence and Wheel of Yoga: For Cyclists.

Location: We shot both videos in the dining room of Ozumo, a Japanese restaurant located in downtown Oakland. The set was simple, yet with an air of exotic elegance. We wanted the ambiance to reflect David’s calming nature but didn’t scream “New Age.” We also required a large open space, so the dining room layout was a perfect fit.

Camera: Love those jib arms! A moving camera can really keep the shot interesting and can also be helpful to show different angles of the body as the camera floats around the instructor and his students. We used two timecode synced HD cameras, with the jib-rigged camera shooting all the wide angles while the second camera captured the close ups.

Narration and Host: David is such a calm on-camera talent to work with – if only they all could be so balanced! For the shorter workouts we decided to have David narrate each routine on camera with the longer routines we used voice-over, which allowed for flexibility in the edit room.
